Who needs an SAP evaluation?

The Department of Transportation (DOT) mandates that certain employees are subject to federal drug and alcohol use and testing regulations. If an employee violates these regulations, they must be immediately removed from safety-sensitive responsibilities, and may not be reinstitute in safety sensitive responsibilities in the transportation industry in the future unless they successfully complete a DOT return process including an SAP evaluation.

What is an SAP evaluation?

An individual who is responsible for overseeing a DOT SAP evaluation is called a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). The Department of Transportation requires an SAP to have specific credentials and knowledge in specific content areas, and to complete an SAP training including the satisfactory completion of an SAP exam.mmendation, 4) and a final session with the employee to be conducted upon completion.

What is the typical process like?

The initial assessment includes a standardized test with proven testing tools which assists in determining the severity of the addiction, how motivated the client is, how best to treat the problem, and how likely relapse would be. A follow-up letter provided after the final session will provide the employer proof of successful completion of the treatment recommended by the Substance Abuse Professional.
